Art for the wounds of the soul

Psychoanalysis and Desire

As a child, Mercedes Sierra used to paint with her father. ‘One of her fondest memories from that time.’ For her, a love of art has always been present in her life, even though she had travelled other paths before returning to what she calls ‘the passion of her soul’.

Due to circumstances in her life, at the age of seventeen, she took a different path from the one she desired, but she returned to it, ‘because only there did she find what has become a relief for the pain in her soul.’ Pain caused by the loss of three loved ones in a very short period of time, and in which art once again became a relief and an incentive in her life.

Mercedes says that ‘one morning she woke up with pain in her chest because of such an immense loss. At that moment, she returned to art. It was her own choice that gave rise to sketches for a series of four works that served to alleviate her pain. All in the same morning.’   In other words, she used painting to take the first steps towards filling that hole in the real.

The titles of the works are as follows: ‘Transcending Pain’, ‘Beyond the Veil’, ‘Evolution of Being’ and ‘Rebirth’.

She came to psychoanalysis after this new beginning. ‘There she has been finding answers to what stood between her desire to do and what she herself forbade her to’. It is a search she has undertaken, ‘seeking to reach the most intimate part of her singularity’, which, according to her, ‘wants to capture on her canvases.’

In her encounter with psychoanalysis, a link has been established between her uniqueness, singularity, her desire and her artistic creation. The stitches for the wounds of her soul. She has also used this encounter to create a new series of works inspired by Greek mythology.
